Sacred Geometry: What it is and How it Can Help Balance Our Lives
We might not realize it, but we experience sacred geometry every day. It is in art, architecture, engineering, mathematics, biology, religion, nature and even meditation. In a sense, it’s like a picture within a picture within a picture, in perpetuity.
Ancient cultures recognized that geometric shapes are repeated throughout nature. The spiral of a conch shell is a good example. Other examples of sacred geometry in nature include the hexagonal cells of a bee’s honeycomb and the growth pattern of Romanesco broccoli.
These common patterns and shapes have further been broken down into mathematical formulas and specific symbols that our ancestors believed were the building blocks for everything in the universe. Science supports this theory, illustrating that molecular shapes that are the basis of life, form many of the patterns that were identified by the ancients.
The mathematical formulas and the sacred patterns were used to design and construct many historic buildings including the great pyramids of Egypt and the Parthenon in Greece.
Shapes in sacred geometry include:
- Sphere
- Circle
- Point
- Spiral
- Toroid: Donut-shaped
- Vesica Piscis: The almond/fish shape formed at the intersection of two circles of the same size when their centers touch.
- Platonic Solids: There are five. One example is the tetrahedron or pyramid shape.
- Metatron’s Cube: All five of the Platonic solids are found within the cube, and because of this, it is believed that Metatron’s Cube contains the components of creation.
- Flower of Life: Multiple evenly-spaced circles overlapping to form a flower-like pattern. All five of the Platonic solids, the Vesica Piscis and Metatron’s Cube are within the Flower of Life symbol.
- The Golden Ratio: A mathematical ratio.
These are the basics of our universe, and life as we know it. But how does sacred geometry enhance our lives? It can:
- Assist with mediation and personal awareness
- Engage both sides of the brain
- Enhance 3-D thinking
- Increase the ability to think outside the box
This blog post is a very simplistic description of sacred geometry. There is so much to learn and consider, that we will look at just one of the ways it can enhance our lives—meditation.
Meditation is a very right-brained activity. When we meditate, we sometimes see images, hear calming sounds or insightful voices. This comes from the emotional, intuitive right side of our brains. And when we come out of meditation, and back into waking consciousness, we sometimes begin to doubt the validity of what just happened. That’s our left brain talking. It uses logic to try to dismiss the beauty of our meditation experience.
But the practice of sacred geometry, balances things out, allowing both sides of the brain to work together. One method is to take pencil, paper, ruler and compass, and start drawing one of the sacred geometrical shapes. Simple ones to do are called the Seed of Life and the Egg of Life, both part of the Flower of Life. There are demonstrations on YouTube for how to draw these and other sacred geometry shapes. These activities will strengthen the bonds between the right and left sides of your brain, making meditation more effective. And, as we know, there are countless ways that meditation can help us live a calmer and physically healthier life.
